Great Weekend at the Home Internationals

Following the success of the Championships, most of the squad took a break and enjoyed their win, but for three members of ULRC\'s men\'s squad, there was no rest. Andrew Hurley, Stephen Penny and Liam Rice jumped right into training for the Home Internationals Regatta, which is a regatta between Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, held in Cork this past weekend. It was a great honour for the boys, this being Andrew Hurley\'s first time representing Ireland and Rice and Penny\'s second time. The fruits of their labour paid off once again with a great result at the weekend. Andrew Hurley\'s boat came second in the Mens Lightweight Double Scull and Rice and Penny\'s boats, the Mens Under 23 Coxless Four and Mens 8+, were both won convincingly. This has been an incredibly successful month for the three, who were in both the winning Intermediate 4+ and 8+ and will spur on future successes for them in the sport. ULRC would like to thank the UL Students Union and the Sports Department for funding the levies for the three boys, all University of Limerick students. Without this help they might not have been able to participate in the Home Internationals. more >>>

Legendary Weekend for ULRC at National Championships

On an overcast weekend in July, months of training are put to the test as the Irish National Rowing Championships commence in Inniscara, Co. Cork. In less than seven minutes, down a six-lane, two thousand metre course is the one shot the University of Limerick Rowing Club has to fight for a chance for the All-Ireland Rowing Champs pot. For the rowers of ULRC, the countless hours on the rowing machines, 7 AM training times and the blistered hands from the innumerable time on the water culminate in this Championships weekend as their shot at glory in the Intermediate and Senior events. This marks the first year of ULRC under new Rowing Director James Mangan and ULRC has their sights set high. ULRC has only won a Championships title once outside of the novice grade, with Cathal Moynihan (ML4- Beijing \'08) and Paddy Quinn in the Inter 2- in 2005, but both squads this year are looking to change this. more >>>

Water Pressure

Building on their success from the previous weeks Metropolitan Regatta in London the UL Inter squad won out at Dublin Metropolitan Regatta. The eight was raced late in the day over a shortened 1700m course, but conditions were ideal for the event. Under the new Grand League series the eight was racing against Muckross and NUIG who were battling it out for the senior title. While Muckross won outright the crew came home in good company alongside the NUIG eight and ahead of the other local crew St. Michaels. As the season intensifies this was a major test for the squad and sets them up nicely for their next race, the National Championships in Cork in five weeks time. more >>>

London Prize

The annual pilgrimage to London paid off handsomely this year with a win for both the ladies and mens squads. On Saturday the ladies four won the Inter3 event in fine fashion. A stellar performance meant they were leading the other boats home as they pushed for the line. While on Sunday the men stepped up to the mark in the Inter1 event. Their row complemented the outcome of the womens race the previous evening by winning with a clear margin over their competitors. Other crews in this final included the mens squad second four and Cork BC. more >>>

March on...

The University of Limerick Rowing Club has seen an incredible level of activity since the winter with the Club competing in several events throughout the country and overseas. Towards the end of March the Club sent an Intermediate crew to London who put in a stellar performance competing with other crews at international level. While the Inter crew were abroad the rest of the Club travelled to Galway to compete in the Tribesmen Head of the River. Strong performances were put in by all crews across several disciplines including sculls, pairs and of course eights and fours. Of particular note was the mens Novice eight who made it into the national papers following an accident that resulted in a crewmember being thrown overboard... more >>>

Great Expectations

UL Rowing Club have started an eight week training programme in conjunction with Castletroy College to introduce transition year students to the sport of rowing. The session involves an introduction lesson in the indoor rowing tank followed by some water spins. The students are also given a few sessions on the ergometer, with a 500m erg test at the end of the eight weeks. It is hoped that the programme will spark an interest in the sport and that they will join one of the many clubs in Limerick. Castletroy College already has close links with Castleconnell Boat Club and at the end of the training each student will be given contact details for the club in Castleconnell as well as the other rowing clubs in Limerick. more >>>

World Ergathlon Champs

The University of Limerick played host to the first ever World Ergathlon Championships on Sunday 31st January. An ergathlon is an endurance event comprising of running and erging. The competition is a great motivation for individual athletes but also acts as a team building event. And it is highly entertaining for the spectators. Pictured is Ronan Long who, inspired by his older brother taking part in the event decided to row his own 2k and picked up a winning teeshirt for his troubles. On hand to present the prizes were Paul OConnell of Munster rugby and Sean Casey of the Irish rowing squad. Many thanks to all Club members who helped organise the event and who took part in the competition. more >>>

Flood relief

Over the exams and Christmas break there has been a flurry of activity at the boathouse. Though the flooding threatened to wash us all away, the training continued unabated and crews continue to progress at a breakneck speed. Between the deluge of water and freezing of the river, much of the training has been indoors. Fortunately, UL crews managed to get a break in the weather by heading into the city waters for a winters morning spin. more >>>

A Bridge Too Far

The task of out doing St. Michaels at their own Head race proved a bridge too far for UL this weekend. The event, taking place in OBriensbridge was a re-run of the cancelled event from earlier in the year, and it was well supported by local clubs. A perfect day on the water meant for some quality rowing and threw up some exciting racing. In the big one - Senior Eights - a local derby pitched UL up against the event organisers, St. Michaels. Both crews made the most of the excellent conditions and put in respectable times. UL finished in a time of 10.04, being pipped for the podium by the St. Michaels crew who finished their piece in 9.43 minutes. For UL, another interesting result, and one that will be referred to again and again over the quiet winter months was the light four completing their race 6 seconds ahead of the heavy four. more >>>

From Orientation Week, to Recruitment night and right trough the month of September the club has had an open access policy for anyone to walk in and look around. This has created a domino effect, and given the coaching team a great selection of new athletes for crew selections this season. All of the club members efforts will culminate with the official opening of the Boathouse on Wednesday 30th September. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the University of Limerick Students Union have invited The Blizzards to the Boathouse for their first on-campus concert...!! Team O Sullivan

Following the AGM held on the 20th April 2009 the Club has a new committee selected for this season. Responsibility for the recruitment and retention of new members now lies with the O Sullivans, Alice in charge of the women and Brendan in charge of the men. And they have been working hard all summer! This year the Club will be featured as part of the college Orientation Week for first years as well as the usual recruitment night. There is also an ongoing awareness campaign culminating with the Boathouse opening on the 30th of September. The Club is always looking at new ways of promoting the sport on campus and this year we launch a video presentation around campus to give students an idea of the facilities in the new boathouse and what it is like rowing in UL. Worlds End

There was disappointment for the Irish squads at the World Rowing Championships held in Poznan in Poland this year as the crews missed out on a place in the finals. Amy Judge of UL Rowing Club earned a green jersey as coxswain in the legs, trunk and arms mixed coxed four. Her crew produced excellent rows in the heats and repechage but just missed out on a spot in the A Final by one place. They will now race in the B Final on Friday. The crew consists of Sarah Caffrey, Kevin du Toit, Shane Ryan and Emer Patten and is coached by James Mangan of Castleconnell. Pictured is Sarah Caffrey, stroke with Amy in the coxes seat. more >>>

Certain Outcome

It was a collegiate affair for the big boat races at the National Rowing Championships this weekend with Queens University poised to take all the headlines. In the 'prix de l'Arc' event, Mens Senior Eights, it was high quality racing where NUIG left it until very late before stealing the prize from the northern students. On paper this really was Galways to lose. The college squad had the experience of Olympic squad members in their boat and had been through a very successful season. However, once the crews left the stake boats the script had to be ripped up. more >>>

The womens squad has entered their eight to compete on both days of the London Metro Regatta. Meanwhile the senior men complete in the quads event and the novice men compete in the eights and fours. There are also plenty of individuals competing in the mens sculls events across all grades. As a prelude to the ultimate race of the season the Irish Rowing Championships - this event will be seen as the litmus test for squads performing against top competition from all over the UK. The venue is Dorney Lake in Eton which is where the Olympics will be held in 2012. King of the Castle

Andrew Hurley won Inter sculls in Castlewellen this weekend. The Varsities/Queens event saw some great racing but the gold medals were hard to come by. Andrews race was one of the last events of the weekend but was well worth waiting for! Other noteworthy results were a win for the Inter Men in the quad, and a second place for Adrian O\'Donoghue in the novice sculls. The novice mens squad didnt feature in the eights events but faired better in the four by making the finals on both days. For the womens squad a smaller entry meant there were few opportunities to shine. It was however a welcome chance for coxswain Liahna Gonda-King to prove her skills in charge of the girls. Paddy Dooley - RIP

As the Club begins to ramp up for regatta season we take the time to remember a good comrade of the Club - Paddy Dooley - who passed away in December 2008. Many of the newer members of the Club will not have met Paddy in person but he has been a great support for the Club in the past and especially for the students who received the Rowing Club Scholarship named after Paddy. For sure, his name will live on as future students continue to benefit from the scholarship award, set up by the Dooley family. But for now, we take the time to remember a good friend who will be sorely missed by all who came across Paddy through UL Rowing Club. Indeed, his contribution to sport in Limerick was very considerable and he will greatly missed by all involved in rowing. more >>>

Light relief

It was well publicised that the Irish boats had been given difficult draws in their respective heats in the opening of the Beijing Olympic Rowing Regatta. But with the heavyweight four putting in a serious performance to go straight through to their semi finals the spirit in the camp must have been high. However the lightweight crew of Cathal Moynihan, Gearoid Towey, Richard Archibald and Paul Griffin just missed out on the direct route with a scramble to the line in an extremely close finish with France and Poland, while Germany won in a time of 5.50. September 2006

ULRC would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to all the new students enrolling this semester. You are about to begin some of the most enriching years of your life. As we all know, its intimidating starting off new, but if you're active, sporty and are looking for something a little different, pop on by the Rowing Club stand at Freshers Week. We will have members there explaining what exactly is involved and you'll be surprised how easy it is to catch 'the bug'. There are no requirements, save that you can stay afloat for a few mins and after a session or two, you'll be surprised how much you want more. The rowing club caters for all levels of the sport, from novices to seniors, and if you have rowed before, then we'd love to hear from you, exchange a few stories and so on, so if you're fun or quiet, active or lazy, big or small, girl or boy or any other adjective you can think of, call up to us and give one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland a go. more >>>

The main prizes up for grabs every year at these championships are the Wylie Cup and the Bank of Ireland Trophy, awarded for the men's eights and women's fours respectively. The trophies were clinched by the men's eight from NUIG and the UCD women's four, both reigning national senior champions and favourites for the events. more >>>
